Verification Checks

Verification Checks in Ecommerce: Definition

Verification checks are the tests a business runs to confirm that a shopper, payment method, or claim is what it appears to be. In ecommerce they include payment checks like AVS and CVV, identity checks like multi-factor authentication and document verification, and operational checks like delivery confirmation and return intake inspection.

The Main Types of Verification Checks

Payment verification confirms the buyer controls the payment method: Address Verification Systems match the billing address against the issuer’s records, CVV confirms physical possession of the card, and 3-D Secure adds issuer-side authentication. Identity verification confirms the person is who they claim: multi-factor authentication at login, one-time codes for sensitive changes, and document checks in high risk flows. Operational verification confirms events happened as claimed: delivery scans, return package weight and contents, and claim evidence.

The Trade-Off Every Check Carries

Each check adds assurance and friction at the same time. Applied uniformly, checks tax every honest shopper to catch a small minority of bad actors, and blunt use of payment checks is a classic source of false declines: an AVS mismatch alone is weak evidence, since legitimate shoppers mistype addresses and move house. The stronger pattern is adaptive verification, where the level of checking scales with the risk of the specific event rather than applying one gate to everyone.

How Wyllo Helps

Verification tells you who someone is; it says little about what they’re about to do. Wyllo reads verification results as signals inside intent-aware decisioning, so a stray AVS mismatch doesn’t cost you a good customer and a clean-looking identity with abusive behavior doesn’t sail through. Frequently Asked Questions

Are more verification checks always better?

No. Each added check costs conversion, and Baymard Institute’s checkout research consistently shows friction and trust concerns among the top reasons shoppers abandon. The goal is the right check at the right moment, not the most checks.

Which verification checks matter most for fraud screening?

None is decisive alone. AVS and CVV are cheap, useful signals; device and behavioral verification are harder for bad actors to fake; and step-up authentication is the strongest tool for account protection. Their power is in combination.
