Pre-Gateway Fraud Prevention

Pre-Gateway Fraud Prevention: Definition

Pre-gateway fraud prevention is fraud screening that happens before a transaction is sent to the payment gateway for authorization. Instead of judging an order after the payment attempt, pre-gateway screening evaluates the shopper and the order first, blocking bad transactions before they touch the payment rails and helping legitimate shoppers fix errors before they become declines.

How Pre-Gateway Screening Works

As the shopper checks out, screening evaluates identity coherence, device and network signals, behavioral telemetry, and history in real time. Risky attempts are blocked or challenged before authorization. Legitimate shoppers who mistype a card number or address are prompted to correct it in the moment, rather than being declined post-gateway when the chance to save the order is gone. That correction loop is the conversion story: fewer avoidable declines, higher approval rates, and card testing traffic that never reaches the processor.

Pre-Gateway vs. Post-Gateway

Post-gateway fraud prevention screens orders after authorization, deciding whether to fulfill. It benefits from the issuer’s response data but can only cancel, not save, an order. The approaches complement each other: pre-gateway protects conversion and the merchant’s processing reputation; post-gateway adds a second look before shipment. Screening only after the gateway leaves both card testing costs and recoverable declines on the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does pre-gateway screening add checkout friction?

Done well it removes friction: honest shoppers get real-time error correction instead of a hard decline, and only risky attempts meet a challenge. The friction is adaptive, applied where the risk is.

Why do false declines drop with pre-gateway screening?

Many false declines start as fixable data errors, a typo in the card number or an outdated billing address. Catching those before authorization converts would-be declines into completed sales.
