Post-gateway fraud prevention is fraud screening that happens after a transaction has been authorized by the payment gateway, deciding whether an approved order should actually be fulfilled. It is the traditional home of ecommerce fraud review: the payment went through; the question is whether to ship.
How Post-Gateway Screening Works
Once authorization succeeds, the order is scored using everything known at that point, including the issuer’s response codes, AVS and CVV results, and the full identity, device, and behavioral picture. Clear orders release to fulfillment automatically, clear fraud is cancelled and refunded before shipment, and the grey area routes to manual review. Because the merchandise hasn’t shipped, post-gateway screening is the last cheap moment to stop a loss; after shipment the options shrink to disputes and recovery.
Strengths and Limits
Post-gateway screening sees the most complete transaction picture, including issuer responses unavailable earlier. What it cannot do is save an order: a legitimate shopper declined at the gateway is already gone, and card testing traffic has already hit the processor. That is why mature programs pair it with pre-gateway fraud prevention: one protects conversion before authorization, the other protects fulfillment after it.
How Wyllo Helps
Wyllo Payment Fraud Protection screens on both sides of the gateway and keeps deciding after fulfillment, where refund claims, disputes, and account behavior reveal the risk a payment snapshot misses. One connected view of intent, from checkout through post-purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
If an order was authorized, why screen it again?
Authorization means the card is valid and has funds, not that the cardholder placed the order. Stolen card orders authorize successfully every day; the merchant, not the issuer, absorbs the chargeback when they do.
Which matters more, pre-gateway or post-gateway screening?
They answer different questions: pre-gateway protects approval rates and processing reputation, post-gateway protects fulfillment. Brands losing revenue to declines feel the pre-gateway gap; brands shipping into chargebacks feel the post-gateway one. Most need both.
